Since coming to work in Washington, D.C. for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Elon Musk has been thanked for his efforts by being called a Nazi and a fascist, having Tesla dealerships vandalized and burned down, and receiving death threats. The guy who has been the hero of the left because he makes electric cars is now their biggest villain for partnering with President Donald Trump. And because he was born in South Africa, for the left, he is a racist simply by default. Now, one group thinks they have proof.
The NAACP was once a storied organization that fought for equality and the rights of black Americans. Now, it has been reduced to a group of individuals who see racism everywhere, and now they’re demanding that officials in Memphis, Tennessee, shut down Musk’s xAI supercomputer facility outside of the city, claiming that the facility, the world’s largest, is violating clean air laws and threatening a nearby predominantly black community.

The group sent letters to both the Shelby County Health Department and Memphis Gas, Light, and Water companies, which claim that xAI has been operating up to 35 gas turbines for over a year without the correct permits at the complex in South Memphis. They also claim that the turbines powering the supercomputer, which trains the Grok AI chatbot, are emitting hazardous pollutants. The letter reads in part:
“We are urging you again to ensure that xAI stops operating its unpermitted turbines in violations of clean air and open meeting act laws and to order xAI to pay penalties for operating in violation of the law. The message that [Shelby County Health Department] and [Memphis Light, Gas and Water] have sent to the community is that billionaires matter more than the tax payers and residents who live there.”
The NAACP’s claim that the turbines are operating illegally is at odds with a statement from Mayor Paul Young, who said at an April town hall meeting that starting in September of 2024, xAI would be permitted to run the turbines legally for one year without a permit. However, the NAACP still claims that operating the turbines is illegal, and claims that they emit as much as 2,000 tons of nitrogen oxide a year, violating the Clean Air Act’s “New Source Review” rule. xAI had also planned to split the turbines into smaller groups, which led to the NAACP implying an attempt to “sidestep the law.”

It was here in the letter that officials imply an accusation of what the left likes to call “environmental racism” of xAI, stating,
“xAI did not choose to start in any community, Musk built his first southwest Memphis, Tennessee center near Boxtown, which is [sic] historically black community in the state.” This decision perpetuated the trend of industries adding pollution to communities who do not cause the problem.”
Unfortunately for the NAACP, the supply of actual racism in America does not meet the demand. And while they are busy accusing Elon Musk of racism, environmental or otherwise, they are conveniently forgetting some facts. Musk’s xAI facility is a roughly $12 billion investment in the city. It is believed that investment will create thousands of jobs in tech, engineering, construction, and other fields. You would think the NAACP would champion those high-paying jobs in a nearby black community. But sadly, for the very community the NAACP claims to care about, the race industry may be more profitable.
The left hates Elon Musk precisely because he’s effective.
